Do you remember? Maybe you’re too young to know but once upon a time, the internet used to be a tool to connect. Fake accounts, spam, ads, trolls, data mining, political bias and negativity, replaced all that was good. These days, personal human connection is a fairy tale. I intend to change that. I’m creating a community for anyone who loves to celebrate all we have in common. Smile for what’s to come!
In August I opened the doors to CreativeU – a community for Artists and Writers. Sadly, those doors closed. I tried but I couldn’t compete with the big corp advantage. How do they get rich when everything they offer is free?
Because, nothing’s ever free.
You’re not the customer. YOU’RE the product! How does it feel to be bought and sold? Facebook earns money by selling you — your attention, your behaviors, your personal data. You’re the gold in their bank and wallets.
Advertising
Companies pay a lot for ads but they need to know how to target their audience for financial gain. Facebook knows YOU and gives them YOUR data:
- What You Like & Probably Buy
- Who You Interact With
- What You Click & How Long You View Something
- Your Age, Interests, Shopping Habits, & Location
- What Posts Upset or Excite You
Data Mining
Facebook collects massive amounts of behavioral data. The more algorithms know about you, the more ads can push what you’re likely to click. The longer you stay, the more ads you see. The more ads you see, the more money Facebook makes. This is why emotional, outrageous, or addictive content gets boosted — it keeps people scrolling. Even if they don’t “sell” the data directly, they use it to:
- Build Better Targeting
- Predict Your Behavior
- Keep You Scrolling
- Increase Ad Impressions
Partnerships & Integrations
The system is built on top of the user base. Facebook also earns from:
- Marketplace Fees
- Paid Partnerships
- Business Tools
- API Integrations
- Special Data Arrangements
The Bottom Line
Facebook, and other social media sites, are free because you, your data, and your attention are what make them money. They don’t need to charge you. They profit by turning your everyday activities into an advertising engine that generates billions. I’m not ok with this. Are you? What would freedom from this be worth to you?
I’m not here to take people away from Facebook, YouTube or any other platform. I’m offering a choice. A place where data mining doesn’t exist. Where trolls aren’t allowed and political opinions are left for other platforms where drama screams into existence. I’m offering you a fun place to celebrate everything we have in common – a creative community.
The Solution
I don’t have much, but what I do have, I’ll use for you. The community won’t be free, but for a cup of coffee, you’ll have access for a year! No kidding! A second tier supports our mom & pop shops, talented creators, and people with amazing services. I want you to have a place for earning potential! Last but not least, get excited for the third Educator Tier. Use the platform to teach your own classes! What you earn goes directly to you. No matter the membership tier, you’ll be part of an amazing club.
