This is the first in a short genre blog series. We’ll explore and define popular and specialized genres so you’ll know exactly where your story fits.
Prophetic Fiction
Definition:
Prophetic Fiction is a literary genre that uses storytelling to convey warnings, visions, or revelations about the future. The writing has a moral foundation with spiritual or societal implications. It doesn’t always mean “predicting” the future, but rather illuminating possible outcomes. Showing how choices made today serve as a cautionary tale for what may come tomorrow. This kind of social critique writing can serve as a spiritual wake-up call. The “prophetic” element refers to its intention to reveal truth, challenge readers, and inspire reflection or change.
Characteristics:
- Often allegorical or symbolic in nature.
- Raises moral, ethical, or spiritual questions.
- May blend realism with visions, dreams, or supernatural elements.
- Typically warns against destructive paths society or humanity might take.
- Can be hopeful or dire, depending on the message.
Popular Examples:
Ray Bradbury – Fahrenheit 451
A vision of a society where books are banned and critical thinking is suppressed
George Orwell – 1984
A dystopian warning against totalitarianism, surveillance, and loss of individual freedom.
Aldous Huxley – Brave New World
A prophetic look at consumerism, genetic engineering, and the sacrifice of individuality for comfort.
